Let \(R_{n,\nu}(z)\) denote the \((n,\nu)\)-Padé rational approximant to \(e^ z\), with numerator of degree \(n\) and denominator of degree \(\nu\). The authors give a very accurate account of the convergence of the zeros and poles of the normalized Padé approximant \(R_{n,\nu}((n+\nu)z)\) towards certain Jordan arcs, if \(n= n_ j\), \(\nu= \nu_ j\) and \(\sigma_ j= n_ j/\nu_ j\to \sigma\) \((j\to\infty)\) with \(0< \sigma< \infty\). These arcs vary with \(j\), and the order of convergence is \(O\left({1\over n_ j+\nu_ j}\right)\) if two critical points on them are excluded; this is best possible. The results extend those in \textit{A. J. Carpenter}, \textit{R. S. Varga} and \textit{J. Waldvogel} [Rocky J. Math. 21, 99-120 (1991; Zbl 0734.30008)], where the case \(\sigma_ j= 0\), i.e. the normalized partial sums of the exponential function, is treated.
