The problem of reconstructing a three-dimensional object from orthographic projections, when only the boundaries of the projected objects are given, is ill-posed. A survey of the existing computer procedures in the field shows that none of them is able to correctly incorporate solutions for pathological cases or handle incomplete additional information. The authors present a collection of programs that stepwise solve the problem for polyhedral objects by removing pathological cases, determining the correct outward normals of the faces, and use additional information to cut down the exponentially growing number of candidates in reconstruction.
