The first part of the article consists of a detailed algebraic description of the torsion \(\xi\) and the curvature \(R\) of an almost Hermitian manifold of real dimension \(2n\). This description is based on the decomposition of the exterior algebra according to type, and allows one to combine the \(U(n)\)-equivariant decomposition of \(\xi\) and \(R\) due to \textit{A. Gray} and \textit{L. M. Hervella} [Ann. Mat. Pura Appl., IV. Ser. 123, 35-58 (1980; Zbl 0444.53032)] and \textit{F. Tricerri} and \textit{L. Vanhecke} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 267, 365-398 (1981; Zbl 0484.53014)], respectively. Attention is given to the space \({\mathcal K}\) of curvature tensors of Kähler metrics and its orthogonal complement \({\mathcal K}^ \perp\) in the space of all curvature tensors (at a given point). The dependence of the various components of \(R\) in \({\mathcal K}^ \perp\) on \(\xi\) and its derivative are quantified with the help of tables. This leads the authors to establish a number of properties of the curvature of certain classes of almost Hermitian manifolds and homogeneous spaces. An exposition of the 4-dimensional case \((n=2)\) includes reference to the Taub-NUT metric, which has pointwise constant holomorphic sectional curvature \(s\). The function \(s\) is examined in a more general context in the last section, and \({\mathcal K}^ \perp\) is characterized as the space of curvature tensors for which \(s\) vanishes.
