The author gives new proofs for the enumeration of plane partitions, symmetric plane partitions, self-complementary plane partitions, and transpose-complement plane partitions. These proofs rest on the realization of Stanley and Proctor that the set of plane partitions in an \(a\times b\times c\) box can be regarded as a basis of an irreducible representation of \(\text{SL}(a+ b)\). Using this realization, he also proves a joint result with Stembridge that for such plane partitions, the operation of complementation is linearly conjugate to the operation of assigning negative weight to partitions with an odd number of cubes.
