Using algebraic number theory a relation between the decomposition group of a prime divisor of the order of a difference set and the numerical multiplier group is obtained and used. Given a subset \(D\) of an Abelian group \(G\) of order \(v\) a integer \(t\) such that \((t,v)= 1\) and \(\{d^{(t)}\mid d\in D\}= D\) is called a strong multiplier of \(D\). Two characterizations of strong multipliers give applications to difference sets. Unfortunately to quote sharply main results it would be necessary to set too many notations, and so we quote only a corollary: let \(\chi\) be a character of \(G\) and let \(D\) be a \((v,k,\lambda)\)-difference set in \(G\). If the trace of \(\chi(D)\) is an integer then any prime divisor \(p\) of \(|\chi(D)|^ 2\) which is coprime to \(v\) is a multiplier of \(D\) (maybe \(p< \lambda\)!). To end, a completely number theoretical proof of a theorem of \textit{K. T. Arasu} [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 44, 156-158 (1987; Zbl 0601.05007)] is given, showing the interest of the author's methods.
