The notion of inner amenability (well known for groups) is introduced for Clifford semigroups. Each element \(s\) of such a semigroup \(S\) defines an inner endomorphism \(c(s)\) on \(S\), which in turn induces an operator \(c(s)\) on the space \(B(S)\) of all bounded functions on \(S\). A mean \(\varphi\) on \(B(S)\) that is invariant under this operator, is called inner invariant. Likewise the notion of inner invariance is defined for subsets \(V\) of \(S\). Now \(S\) is said to be inner amenable on an inner invariant subset \(V\) if there exists an inner invariant mean \(\varphi\) on \(S\) such that \(\varphi(V)=1\). There is a correspondence between a Clifford semigroup \(S\) and a certain group \(G_ S\) obtained from \(S\) by means of a certain congruence relation \(\rho\). It is known that \(S\) is amenable if and only if \(G_ S\) is. In section 1 the relation between inner amenability of \(S\) and that of \(G_ S\) is studied. In particular it is shown that \(S\) is inner amenable on an inner invariant subset \(V\) of \(S\) if and only if \(G_ S\) is inner amenable on its \(\rho\)-image \(W\). One consequence is that an amenable \(S\) is inner amenable on each inner invariant subset \(V\). Another one is that \(S\) is always inner amenable on the set \(Z_ S\), the inverse image of the center of the group \(G_ S\). Criteria for inner amenability of \(S\) on the complement of \(Z_ S\) are given in the last section of the paper. Finally, in the middle section various characterizations of inner amenability of \(S\) on an inner invariant subset \(V\) are given. Here an analogue to the classical property \(P_ p\) [cf. the reviewer's paper Indag. Math. 27, 702-703 (1965; Zbl 0141.318)] plays a rôle. There is also a fixed point theorem concerning the inner amenability of \(S\) on an inner invariant subset \(V\).
