In the recent years several authors investigated the concepts of \(k\)- spanned and \(k\)-very ample line bundle \((k\geq 0)\) on a complex projective manifold, in connection with the notion of higher order embedding, and studied several properties of such bundles. In particular the preservation of \(k\)-very ampleness under adjunction for a line bundle \(L\) on a surface has been studied by \textit{M. C. Beltrametti} and \textit{A. J. Sommese} [Math. Z. 212, No. 2, 257-283 (1993; Zbl 0806.14015)] in the general case \(L^ 2\geq 4k+5\), and by \textit{E. Ballico} and \textit{A. J. Sommese} [cf. Nagoya Math. J. 136, 57-79 (1994)] in the low degree cases (the break-up in this study being naturally suggested by the range of applicability of Reider's type results). For a projective manifold of dimension \(n\geq 3\), the authors introduced a useful notion of \((k,a)\)- spannedness for any integer \(a\geq 1\), to interpolate the \(k\)-spannedness \((a=1)\) and the \(k\)-very ampleness \((a=n)\). E.g. if \(L\) is a \((k,2)\)- spanned line bundle on a threefold, then the restriction \(L_ S\) of \(L\) to a smooth surface \(S\in| L|\) is \(k\)-very ample. -- The authors prove the following result: Let \(X\) be a projective manifold of dimension \(n\geq 3\) and let \(L\) be a \((k,2)\)-spanned line bundle on \(X\), \(k\geq 2\). If \(L^ n\leq \max\{ 11, 4k+2\}\), then the adjoint bundle \(K_ X+ (n-1)L\) is \((k,1)\)-spanned unless \((X, L)\) is \((\mathbb{P}^ 3, {\mathcal O}_{\mathbb{P}^ 3} (2))\) or a Veronese bundle over a smooth curve. The higher degree case was studied by the authors in a previous paper [Manuscr. Math. 76, No. 3/4, 407-420 (1992; Zbl 0791.14007)].
