For \(X\) a complex algebraic variety let \(Z_p (X)\) be the group of \(p\)- cycles. A topology on \(Z_p (X)\) is introduced as the finest topology which makes continuous all flat families over smooth base spaces. Then: \(Z_p (X)\) is a Hausdorff topological group, has the structure of a countable \(CW\)-complex and it is functorial; if \(Y\) is closed in \(X\) then \(Z_p (Y)\) is closed in \(Z_p (X)\) and \[ Z_p (Y) \to Z_p (X) \to Z_p (X - Y) \] is a principal fibration. Furthermore the topology is given as direct limit topology of a filtering sequence of cofibrations which are closed compact subsets of \(Z_p (X)\) and have successive differences isomorphic to algebraic varieties. A comparison between approaches to the topology on \(Z_p (X)\) by dealing with equidimensional families and Chow varieties (also related with Lawson homology) is provided.
