Amplifying and extending the one-dimensional methods of the paper [\textit{J. Corones} and \textit{R. Krueger}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 95, 393-415 (1983; Zbl 0542.35058)], the authors describe a formalism for applying an invariant imbedding technique to the scalar wave equation in any number of space dimensions. They study the scattering operator for a slab of material bounded by two planes and develop differential equations for this operator as a function of the location of two parallel planes. Several interesting examples are given.
