For two measurable sets \(E\) and \(E'\) in \(\mathbb{R}^ n\), we say that \(E\) and \(E'\) are equivalent if the symmetrical difference \(E\Delta E'\) has Lebesgue measure zero. For \(1< p< \infty\), let \(M_ p(\mathbb{R}^ n)\) be the Banach algebra of multipliers for \(L^ p(\mathbb{R}^ n)\). The authors obtained the following theorem. Theorem. Let \(E\) be a measurable set such that the indicator-function \(I_ E\) belongs to \(M_ p(\mathbb{R}^ n)\) for some \(p\neq 2\). Then \(E\) is equivalent to an open set. They also pointed out that a similar result holds for \(\mathbb{T}^ n\).
