The authors give a new proof of a result about the existence of nontrivial solutions of the equation \[ u(x) = \int_ 0^ x k(x-s)g \bigl( u(s) \bigr) ds.\tag{1} \] This result says that if \(k\) is nonnegative, locally integrable with \(\int_ 0^ x k(s) ds > 0\) for \(x>0\) then one can find a function \(g\) which is continuous, nondecreasing, \(g(0) = 0\), and \(\lim_{s \to 0+} g(s)/s = \infty\), such that (1) has a nontrivial solution and a function \(g\) with the same properties such that (1) has only the trivial zero solution. Moreover, for each \(g\) one can find a function \(k\) so that either one of the conclusions above hold.
