A conceptual approach to hypnosis is presented, permitting the connection of some observations with general ideas concerning the organization of the nervous system and neuronal network models. Details have not been specified since the principles of the associative paradigm and adaptational laws of memory change seem to be universal and applicable to any complicated function of nervous activity. The concrete form of the adaptation law is the subject of a concrete model. The minimal, natural characteristics, which concrete systems may possess, have been introduced and, at the first level, the effects of hypnosis exhibited by both human beings and animals obtained. The phenomena of the higher levels are inherent only to humans and it has been shown that distortions of consciousness characterizing hypnosis may be treated in the framework of two-layer models, in which the first level is in a refractory state and the second zone forms a sort of the rapport zone that causes a distortion of associative links. It is supposed that the generality of the approach is an advantage of the model, since it allows it to be filled with more concrete contents without diminishing the main principles.
