Let \(p\) be an odd prime number and \(F\) a number field with ring of integers \(o_ F\), such that \(F\) does not contain a primitive \(p\)-th root of unity. The key result of the paper shows that the \(p\)-primary part of the tame kernel \(K_ 2 (o_ F)\) is generated by Dennis-Stein symbols provided that \(p\) does not divide \([F: \mathbb{Q}]\) and the discriminant of \(F\). Dennis-Stein symbols were defined by \textit{R. K. Dennis} and \textit{M. R. Stein} [Algebraic \(K\)-theory II, Lect. Notes Math. 342, 281-303 (1973; Zbl 0271.18012)] as a generalization of the Steinberg symbols used to describe the \(K_ 2\) of a field. The author uses his results to compute generators for the tame kernel of the real quadratic fields \(\mathbb{Q} (\sqrt {29})\) and \(\mathbb{Q} (\sqrt {109})\), which in turn implies presentations for the special linear groups \(SL_ n (o_ F)\) (\(n\geq 3\)) for these fields.
