Let \(A\) be an indecomposable generalized Cartan matrix of affine type and \({\mathfrak g} (A)\) the corresponding affine Kac-Moody algebra. Unlike finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebras, \({\mathfrak g} (A)\) admits several conjugacy classes of Borel subalgebras (or equivalently several nonconjugate choices of positive roots). The conjugacy classes have been written down by \textit{H. P. Jakobsen} and \textit{V. G. Kac} [Lect. Notes Phys. 226, 1-20 (1985; Zbl 0581.17009)]. The purpose of this article is to study the multiplicities of composition factors for Verma modules induced from Borel subalgebras not conjugate to the standard one. Here weight spaces can be infinite-dimensional. The main results assert that these multiplicities coincide with those for standard Verma modules on a different Kac-Moody algebra, as do the dimensions of the space of intertwining maps from one Verma module to another. The proofs unexpectedly involve the representation theory of infinite-dimensional Heisenberg algebras.
