The paper deals with splitting and quasi-splitting of short exact sequences of the form \(0\to B\to G\to P\to 0\) and \(0\to P\to G\to B\to 0\) where \(P\) is quasi \(A\)-projective (a quasi-summand of a direct sum of a finite number of copies of some group \(A\) of finite rank). The question is related with results of \textit{D. M. Arnold} and \textit{E. L. Lady} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 211, 225-237 (1975; Zbl 0329.20033)], based on the observation that restrictions to reasonable groups \(A\) are in terms of the endomorphism ring of \(A\). The author considers the \(A\)-socle \(S_A(G)=\langle(\sigma A):\sigma\in\text{Hom}(A,G)\rangle\) and dually the \(A\)-radical \(R_A(G)=\bigcap\{\text{Ker }\sigma:\sigma\in\text{Hom}(G,A)\}\). A fine-tuned investigation leads to one of the main-theorems: A torsion-free abelian group \(A\) has a semi- simple Artinian quasi-endomorphism ring if and only if \(A\) is self-small \((\text{Hom}(A,-)\) preserves direct sums of copies of \(A\)) and has the finite quasi-Baer- and the socle-splitting property. The first splitting refers to splitting of the first exact sequence under the restriction that \(\text{Im}(B)+S_A(G)\) is quasi-equal to \(G\), while \(A\) is socle-splitting. Moreover, \(A\) has the radical-splitting property if the second sequence quasi-splits provided \(\text{Im}(P)\cap R_A(G)=0\). The relationship between these splitting properties is discussed.
