A new space-time finite element method of the Dirichlet problem for the wave equation is presented. The main advantage of the method is its explicitness, which allows local mesh refinement. Stability and error estimates are derived. The method is shown to be of almost optimal order accuracy in the derivative, or energy, sense. Computational results are discussed.
