Let \(\Phi\) be a convex increasing function defined on \([0, \infty)\) and satisfying \(\Phi (0) = 0\). The Young-type \(\Phi\)-variation of a function \(f\) defined on \([a,b] \in R\) is: \[ V_ \Phi \bigl( f[a,b] \bigr) = \sup \sum^ m_{i = 1} \Phi \biggl( \bigl | f(x_ i) - f(x_{i - 1}) \bigr | \biggr) \] the supremum being taken on all subdivisions of \([a,b]\). The cases of functions of finite and infinite \(\Phi\)-variation are studied in terms of the modulus of \(\Phi\)-absolute continuity of \(f\) defined by means of \(\Phi\)-variation following Golubov. In particular the estimates for \(\varepsilon\)-entropy of some subset of real functions are obtained. The speed of the convergence to zero of the best rational or polynomial approximations to the functions of infinite \(\Phi\)-variation is also estimated.
