The author of this paper wants to obtain a general inverse theorem partly for infinite dimensional spaces and partly for continuous functions. But it is not so easy to establish this kind of theorem. Nevertheless, he succeeds in obtaining a result for an operator which is a continuous and compact perturbation of the identity. By this theorem, he can show the existence of periodic solutions of ordinary differential equations of boundary value problems. He proves an inverse function theorem for continuous compact perturbations of the identity in reflexive Banach spaces. The proof is based on the paper of \textit{B. Kummer} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 158, No. 1, 35-46 (1991; Zbl 0742.49006)]. He also considers the so-called ``property \({\mathcal J}\)'' together with the theorem. Besides of his abstract theorem, he deals with several examples to illustrate possible applications in boundary value problems.
