    The authors study finite type surfaces in the sense of \textit{Bang-Yen Chen} [Total mean curvature and submanifolds of finite type, World Scientific (1984; Zbl 0537.53049)]. The following theorems are proved: (i) A surface \(M^ 2_ s\) in \(S^ 3_ 1\) is of 2-type if and only if it is an open piece of one of the following surfaces: (a) \(H^ 1 (-r) \times S^ 1 (\sqrt {1 + r^ 2})\), (b) \(S^ 1_ 1(r) \times S^ 1 (\sqrt {1 - r^ 2})\), (c) a \(B\)-scroll over a null curve. (ii) A surface \(M^ 2_ s\) in \(H^ 3_ 1\) is of 2-type if and only if it is an open piece of (a) \(H^ 1_ 1 (-r) \times S^ 1 (\sqrt {r^ 2 - 1})\), (b) \(S^ 1_ 1 (r) \times H^ 1 (-\sqrt{1 + r^ 2})\), (c) \(H^ 1 (-r) \times H^ 1 (- \sqrt{1 - r^ 2})\), (d) a non flat \(B\)-scroll over a null curve.
