In a recent paper [Shadowing orbits of ordinary differential equations, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 52, No. 1-3, 35-43 (1994; Zbl 0813.34042)] the authors developed the transversal shadowing method for chaotic systems of autonomous ordinary differential equations: it finds the points on a nearby true orbit lying on planes normal to the vector field. The present paper offers a refined and practical version of this method. The main result is the finite-time shadowing theorem which justifies the method; its practical numerical implementation is discussed and illustrated by applying it to the Lorenz equations. In addition, the authors give a numerical comparison (using several numerical orbits of the Lorenz equation) of the map method with the transversal shadowing method: it confirms that in many cases of interest, shadowing of orbits of autonomous differential equations based on map methods tends to yield inferior results since the flows lack hyperbolicity in the direction of the vector field. The transversal shadowing method compensates for this shortcoming by allowing the time to drift.
