The author proves that Birkhoff's individual ergodic theorem is nonrobust. If the randomness deficiency grows arbitrarily slowly on initial fragments of an infinite sequence, this theorem does not hold. Finally, an analogous nonrobustness property holds for the Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem.
