Let \(\Omega\) be a domain on \(\mathbb{R}^n\) and \(p(x)\) be a measurable function on \(\Omega\) having values in \([1,\infty]\). The authors study the generalized Lebesgue space \[ L^{p(x)}= \Biggl\{f\text{ measurable on }\Omega:\int_\Omega|\lambda f(x)|^{p(x)} dx<\infty\text{ for some }\lambda> 0\Biggr\}. \] Such space is a Banach space, with the Luxemburg norm \[ \|f\|_{L^{p(x)}}= \inf\Biggl\{\lambda> 0: \int_\Omega|\lambda^{-1} f(x)|^{p(x)} dx\leq 1\Biggr\}. \] In this paper, the authors give an example of a function \(p(x)\) such that the classical Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator is not bounded on the space \(L^{p(x)}\).
