The iterative solution of linear systems is discussed when the symmetric part of the matrix is positive definite and the skew-symmetric part is strong. Such systems arise from the discretization of convection-diffusion equations. In particular, the method called triangular iterative method is investigated and compared with the successive overrelaxation iteration. There are several numerical examples. Often the numbers of required steps are of comparable size, but there are cases in which a factor of 3 in efficiency is gained.
