The author studies the stability and convergence of a generalized hybrid finite element/finite volume methods applied to linear hyperbolic and convection dominated convection-diffusion problems. The analysis is performed for a general mesh of a bounded polygonal domain \(\mathbb{R}^n\) (\(n=2\) or \(3\)) satisfying a minimum angle condition. The method differs from the original one proposed for time dependent problem by \textit{K. Baba} and \textit{M. Tabata} [RAIRO, Anal. Numér. 15, 3-25 (1981; Zbl 0466.76090)] only in that it replaces an evaluation of the interpolant in the connection term by a volume integral average. The main feature of this discretization schemes is to use the standard finite element method for second-order diffusive terms of the equations and a finite volume (or control volume) Galerkin type method for the first-order connective terms of the equations. This method is developed departing from the standard finite volume method. Stability and convergence analysis of the method for general triangulations of the domain satisfying a minimum angle condition are established. Error estimates are also obtained for this hybrid method applied to convection-diffusion equation. The results are new and are of great interest to people working in the field.
