Let \(G\) be a Lie group and let \(\Gamma\) be an arithmetic lattice in \(G\). Let \(X= G/K\) be the Riemannian symmetric space associated to \(G\). The \(L_2\)-cohomology \((H^r_{(2)})\) of \(\Gamma/X\) can be described via the irreducible representations \(\pi\) that occur in \(L^2(\Gamma/G)\) that have nonvanishing continuous cohomology. The author considers the exceptional groups of split rank 4, \(E_{6,4}\) and \(E_{7,4}\), and proves the existence of an arithmetic lattice \(\Gamma \subset G\) such that \(H^{r_G}_{(2)} (\Gamma/X, \mathbb{C})\neq 0\), the number \(r_G\) being 8 and 12, respectively. The author expects that a refinement of his result would yield the nonvanishing of \(H^{r_G} (\Gamma) \). Important results of this nature in the context of exceptional groups have been obtained, for example, by \textit{R. Brylinski} and \textit{B. Kostant} [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 91, 6026-6029 (1994; Zbl 0803.58023)]. The author uses dual pair techniques. In fact, he considers the dual pairs \((G=E_{6,4}, G'=\Pi) \subset E_{7,7}\) and \((G=E_{7,4}, G'=SU(2)) \subset E_{8,8}\) and obtains an explicit decomposition of the minimal representation \(\pi_0\) restricted to \(G \times G'\). He identifies the constituents explicitly in terms of certain \(\sigma_k^\pm =A_{{\mathfrak q}^\pm} (\lambda_k)\). Since \(\pi_0\) is known to be automorphic and \(\sigma_k^\pm\) are Harish-Chandra submodules of \(\pi_0|_G\), he can deduce that \(\sigma_k^\pm\) occur in \(L^2 (\Gamma/G)\). This result combined with Vogan-Zuckerman's theorem that asserts that the modules \(\sigma_k^\pm\) have nonzero continuous cohomology yield the nonvanishing of the \(L^2\)-cohomology.
