The authors consider families of elliptic curves with constant \(j\)-invariant. Given a family they consider a parametrized point and determine whether this point can ever be ``indivisible'', by which they mean the point is not a multiple of another rational point on the curve. They remark that for any given curve and point, this question can be answered by using the NĂ©ron-Tate height and an efficient search technique. For families however no such method is available. The authors prove that for their families the points are indivisible for a set of density one. Furthermore, under some extra hypotheses, they show that the set of points which are divisible is finite. The method uses an analysis of the height functions on an elliptic curve, a sieve technique and a detailed analysis of the geometry of the curves.
