The main result is as follows: Let \( f:R\rightarrow S \) be a flat local homomorphism of Gorenstein local rings with closed fiber \(F.\) \ Then \ \(\text{index}(S) \leq \text{index}(R)\cdot \ell\ell (F) \), where \(\ell\ell (F)\) denotes the generalized Loewy length of \(F\) (theorem 5.1). This can be seen as a counterpart of the inequality \ \(\text{index}(R)\leq \text{index}(S)\) given by \textit{A. Shida} [Commun. Algebra 23, No. 12, 4535-4541 (1995; Zbl 0836.13016)]. In section 3 the authors give a counterexample to the conjecture, \(\text{index}(R) = \ell\ell (R)\), of \textit{S. Ding} [Commun. Algebra 21, No. 1, 53-71 (1993; Zbl 0766.13003)] in the case where the residue field is finite. In section 4 the authors prove that the minimal Cohen-Macaulay approximation of a finitely generated module \(M\) over a Cohen-Macaulay local ring \(R\) is preserved by an extension by a Gorenstein local homomorphism \(R\rightarrow S\) under the assumption \(\text{Tor} _i^R(S,M)=0\) for \( i>0 \). In the final section 6 the following inequality is given for a flat local homomorphism \(R\rightarrow S\) of artinian local rings with fiber \(F\) : \[ \ell\ell(R)+\ell\ell(F) -1\leq \ell\ell(S)\leq \ell\ell(R)\cdot \ell\ell(F). \]
