In this tersely written paper new results and methods are presented for the fast developing research area of symplectic capacities. We summarize some of the results. Gromov capacity \(c_G (M,\omega)\) is the supremum of \(\pi r^2\) for all \(r\) such that there exists a symplectic embedding of the ball \(B^{2n} (r)\) into \(M\). The Gromov proved in 1985 that the capacity of the symplectic cylinder \(Z^{2n} (\varepsilon) \times C^{n-1}\) is \(\varepsilon\). Hofer and Zehnder proposed an axiomatic approach to capacities and defined the Hofer-Zehnder's \(c_{HZ}\). It is remarkable that the definition of \(c_{HZ}\) is directly related to the study of periodic orbits of Hamiltonian systems in \(M\). Under the hypothesis that \(\ell (M, \omega)> \pi r^2\), two theorems are proved. Here \(\ell (M,\omega)= \inf\{(\omega, \alpha) \mid (\omega, \alpha) >0\), \(\alpha\in [S^2,M]\}\) where \([S^2,M]\) stands for the free homotopy classes from \(S^2\) to \(M\). Theorem 1.1. Let \((M,\omega)\) be a compact symplectic manifold. Suppose that \(H:M \times Z(r) \to\mathbb{R}\) satisfies \(H_{|U} \equiv 0\) and \(H_{|M \times Z(r)-K} =m(H)\) for an open subset \(U\) and a compact subset \(K\) of \(U\) and suppose that \(\pi r^2<m(H) <\ell (M,\omega)\). Then the Hamiltonian system \(X_H\) has at least one nontrivial 1-periodic solution. Theorem 1.2. \(c_{HZ} (M\times B(r))=\pi r^2\). Theorem 1.3. Let \((M,\omega)\) be a compact symplectic manifold and suppose that \(\ell (M,\omega) >0\) and \(\Sigma \subset M \times Z(\sqrt {\ell(M, \omega)/ \pi})\) is a compact hypersurface of contact type. Then \(\Sigma\) has at least one closed characteristic. The latter theorem has implications on the Weinstein conjecture for contact manifolds.
