The phase space of the matrix Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy is the space of \(p\times p\) matrix Lax operators \[ L_{p,r} = P\partial^r + u_1 \partial^{r-1} + \ldots + u_{r-1}\partial + u_r, \] \(u_i \in C^{\infty}(S^1, gl_p)\), \(P\) a diagonal matrix with distinct, non-zero entries. This phase space has two compatible Poisson brackets. The Hamiltonians generating a commuting hierarchy of bihamiltonian flows are obtained by the Drinfeld-Sokolov approach applied to a Poisson submanifold in the dual of the Lie algebra \(\widehat{gl}_{pr}\otimes C[\lambda,\lambda^{-1}]\). In continuation of a previous article of both authors [Commun. Math. Phys. 154, No.1, 181-214 (1993; Zbl 0773.35068)] now extensions of the above system are studied using the embedding \(gl_{pr} \subset gl_{pr+s}\) for a positive integer \(s\). The here-defined generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction based on \(\widehat{gl}_{pr+s}\otimes C[\lambda,\lambda^{-1}]\) leads to a phase space which maps to the space of \(p\times p\) matrix pseudo-differential operators. The arizing operators have non-trivial negative parts. Moreover, in contrast to the cases considered before, this mapping is not one-to-one.
