The authors consider the general problem of hysteresis in magnetic and magnetostrictive problems for a two-dimensional rectangular system. They discuss the Stoner-Wohlfarth theory, estimate the critical field and the width of the hysteresis loop, and evaluate the shadow energy. There is also a discussion of the jump conditions which arise in the solution of Poisson's equation. Calculations are carried out by both a Newton method and a conjugate gradient method and it turns out that the energy system results are mesh-independent, implying that a fairly coarse grid is sufficient to indicate the general behaviour.
