The main result shows e.g. that a set \(B\) is of the multiplicative Borel class \(\alpha+1\) in a metrizable space \(X\) if and only if there is a compatible quasi-metric \(\rho\) on \(X\) such that \(B\) is in the additive Borel class \(\alpha\) with respect to \(\rho^* =\max (\rho, \rho^{-1})\). Moreover, the quasi-metric \(\rho\) can be chosen such that \((X, \rho^*)\) is zero-dimensional and the topology induced by \(\rho\) is coarser than that induced by \(\rho^{-1}\).
