The author proposes a new domain decomposition method for elliptic boundary value problems, alternating between iterations on the interiors of the subdomains and on their interfaces. The main idea is that the mapping of the interface updates onto the interiors ought to be done in terms of a hierarchical basis. Estimates are derived for the efficiency of the method and for its condition number. Example computations are performed for a simple test case and for the magnetic field in an electric motor.
