The main theme of the paper is the study of category equivalences between a torsion class of \(R\)-modules and a torsion-free class of \(S\)-modules, where \(R\) and \(S\) are rings. This study is done in the framework of tilting theory for arbitrary rings and the specific tool used is the concept of quasi-tilting module. These modules are defined in the paper with the idea of generalizing tilting modules in the same way as quasi-progenerators generalize progenerators [cf. \textit{K. R. Fuller}, J. Algebra 29, 528-550 (1974; Zbl 0306.16020)]. Thus a quasi-tilting module \(_RV\) can be indirectly described by the fact that its properties in the category of modules subgenerated by \(V\) are similar to those of tilting modules in the category \(R\)-Mod. Generalizing the notion of tilting triple, the authors introduce quasi-tilting triples \((R,V,S)\) and show that they represent, by means of the bimodule \(_RV_S\), all the category equivalences between a torsion class in \(R\)-Mod and a torsion-free class in \(S\)-Mod. The authors also look at torsion theory counter equivalences in the sense of \textit{R. R. Colby} and \textit{K. R. Fuller} [Commun. Algebra 23, No. 13, 4833-4849 (1995; Zbl 0836.16007)]. They prove, for quasi-tilting triples, a local version of `The Tilting Theorem' due to these authors. The last part of the paper is devoted to giving examples which show that many of the results obtained are meaningful even for finite-dimensional algebras over a field.
