The author considers the initial value problem for an ordinary differential equation of first order in a separable Hilbert space (arising from a strongly positive, selfadjoint time-dependent operator) and its approximation by means of a projection-difference method. This method is a fully discrete one: the temporal discretization is an implicit Euler scheme whereas the spatial discretization consists in a projection method (such as a conforming finite element method). The main result of the paper is an error estimate that ensures convergence in the energy norm for an arbitrary sequence of approximating subspaces and is independent of the temporal step size.
