In many branches of analysis, systems appear that contain parabolic equations with ``backward time direction'', for instance: \[ u_t= \Delta_xu+ f(x,t,u,v, \nabla_xu,\nabla_xv),\quad v_t= -\Delta_xv+ g(x,t,u,v, \nabla_xu, \nabla_xv). \] Such systems have important applications in optimal control theory. They arise naturally in attempts to extend the Pontryagin maximum principle to optimization problems for partial differential equations. Some other examples of initial-boundary value problems for systems of parabolic equations with ``backward time direction'' are given in [\textit{S. A. Tersenov}, An introduction to the theory of parabolic equations with varying time direction, Institut Matematiki, Novosibirsk (1982; Zbl 0586.35001)]. In the present article, we study a class of linear differential equations of a rather general form which include the above-mentioned systems as well as normally parabolic systems.
