We describe a family of nine-point approximations which are constructed on the base of linear interpolation in subelements, guarantee symmetry for the matrix of the system of grid equations, and have error \(O(h^2)\) on a nonuniform grid. Using quadratic interpolation of piecewise differentiable functions, we form a system of equations which now fails to enjoy the symmetry property but has higher order for the error, \(O(h^3)\). In both cases, the rise of the order is achieved due to a linear combination of integral balance relations on ``small'' and ``large'' meshes of the grid. For the proposed grid systems of equations, we formulate monotonicity conditions and theorems on estimates for errors in the uniform metric. For symmetric equations with the second-order error, we also obtain an estimate for the error of an approximate solution in the Euclidean grid norm.
