This is a variation on the author's earlier paper [On zero-curvature representations, generated from the geometry of a partial differential equation of second order, Izv. Vyssh. Uchebn. Zaved., Mat. 1994, No. 2 (381), 44-49 (1994); English translation in Russ. Math. 38, No. 2, 42-47 (1994; Zbl 0852.53017)]. A third-order ``fundamental object'' is constructed for a general second-order evolution equation \(u_t = \varphi(t,x^1,\dots,x^n,u,u_i,u_{kl})\). Details are provided for the linear, Burgers and Fisher equations. The author claims that non-trivial zero-curvature representations may be constructed this way, but gives no explicit example to support his conjecture.
