The author obtains an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions \(Q(n)\) of the equation \[ m'- \varphi (u,v)=a \tag{*} \] where a is an arbitrary fixed integer, \(m'\) is an almost prime such that \(\Omega (m')\leq 6\) and \(p\geq n^{1/883}\) if \(p\mid m'\), \((m',a) =1\) and \(\varphi (u,v)\) is a suitable positive quadratic form with \(u,v\) ranging over integers satisfying \(\varphi (u,v)<n\). The proof combines the dispersion method, a theorem by \textit{E. Fouvry} and \textit{H. Iwaniec} [Mathematika 27, 135-152 (1980; Zbl 0469.10027)], and some ergodic properties of solutions of (*). The main result is a bit too long to be stated here.
