The paper deals with the automatic continuity problem for homomorphisms and derivations on the convolution algebra \(L^1(G,A)\) of all Bochner integrable functions on a locally compact Abelian group \(G\) with values in an arbitrary unital complex Banach algebra \(A\). Although these vector-valued group algebras are, in general, neither commutative nor semisimple and hence not covered by the classical theory, it is possible to obtain fairly complete information on all the natural questions of automatic continuity related to these algebras. The main results of this paper display the following dichotomy. For non-compact \(G\), it is shown that, without any assumption on the range algebra \(A\), all derivations on \(L^1(G,A)\) and all epimorphisms from a Fréchet algebra onto \(L^1(G,A)\) are necessarily continuous, whereas, for compact \(G\), the automatic continuity properties of \(L^1(G,A)\) turn out to be intimately related to those of the Banach algebra \(A\). The paper concludes with a discussion of the automatic continuity of homomorphisms and derivations on weighted vector-valued convolution algebras on the real line \(\mathbb{R}\) and the half-line \(\mathbb{R}_+\).
