This paper deals with transcendence and algebraic independence for complex numbers in the general setting of commutative algebraic groups. Both qualitative and quantitative aspects of the subject are considered, with some emphasis on measures of algebraic independence. New results are stated and proved, and at the same time a history of the subject is provided, together with many references and remarks on this topic. The Gel'fond-Fel'dman measure, which is referred to in the title, is a measure of algebraic independence for \(\alpha^{\beta}\) and \(\alpha^{\beta^{2}}\) when \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) are non zero algebraic numbers with \(\log\alpha\not=0\) and \(\beta\) cubic irrational [\textit{A. O. Gel'fond} and \textit{N. I. Fel'dman}, Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Mat. 14, 493-500 (1950; Zbl 0038.19301)]. This measure has been refined by several authors, including G. Diaz who separated the dependence on the degree and the height. Quantitative refinements of general transcendence results due to R. Tubbs have been given by \textit{M. Ably} [J. Number Theory 42, 194-231 (1992; Zbl 0758.11032)]. Here, the author provides a refinement which separates the degree and the height.
