Let \(G\) be a reductive connected group with compact center, over a local non archimedean field of residual characteristic \(p\), and let \(l\neq p\) be a prime number. To each smooth \(R\)-representation of \(G\), for any large integer \(e\), Schneider and Stuhler associate a sheaf \(F_e(V)\) on the building \(X\) of \(G\). Using this construction, one shows that when \(l\) does not divide the order of any open compact subgroup of \(G\), every cuspidal irreducible \(R\)-representation of \(G\) is projective, and for any admissible representations \(V\), \(V'\) and for any integer \(i\) strictly bigger than the semisimple dimension of \(G\), we have \(\text{Ext}^i(V,V')=0\). This is called the banal case. In general, one proves that the dimension of \(\text{Ext}^i(V,V')\) is always finite. When \(V\) is of finite length, one proves that the \(H^i_c(X,F_e(V))\) are of finite length, and the alternate sum in the Grothendieck group defines a \(\mathbb{Z}\)-linear endomorphism which is an involution if and only if in the Grothendieck group, the induction along a parabolic subgroup \(P\) of a cuspidal irreducible representation of a Levi subgroup \(M\) is independent of \(P\). This property is conjectured, but known only in the banal case. When \(V\) is irreducible, one shows that the top cohomology with compact support \(H^i_c(X,F_e(V))\) has a unique irreducible quotient \(Z(V)\), the map \(Z\to Z(V)\) is an involution which generalizes the Zelevinski involution.
