The authors of this interesting paper have established [J. Comput. Appl. Math. 41, 105-116 (1992; Zbl 0726.39002)] discrete versions of the Liouville-Green asymptotic approximation theorems for certain linear second order difference equations. More precisely, they consider the second order linear differential equation \(\Delta^2y_n+q_ny_n=0\), which represents the canonical form of the general three-term recurrence relation \(Y_{n+2}+ A_{n+1} Y_{n+1}+ B_nY_n=0\). These earlier results, which are summarized in the present paper and improved by adding remarks and corollaries, first allow the authors to obtain qualitative information on the asymptotic behavior of the so-called Blumenthal-Nevai class of orthogonal polynomials. Next, precise error estimates for the Darboux-type asymptotic representations of Jacobi polynomials as \(n\to\infty\) are derived. Such estimates hold without any restriction on the parameters \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\). Further, more explicit bounds, which are useful for computational purposes, may be obtained under some restrictions on the parameters.
