Let \(P^{(\alpha,\beta)}_n\) \((\alpha>-1, \beta>-1)\) denote Jacobi polynomials and let \(\{a_n\}\) be a complex sequence satisfying \[ \limsup_{n\to\infty} |a_n|^{{1\over n}}= R^{-1}<1. \] Define the complex function \[ f_{\alpha,\beta}(t):= \sum^\infty_{n=0} a_nP^{(\alpha,\beta)}(t),\quad \alpha>-1,\;\beta>-1.\tag{1} \] When \(\alpha=\beta=0\) (the Legendre polynomial case), Z. Nehari proved that the function \(f_{0,0}\) is analytically continuable across the boundary point \(t_0\) of the ellipse of convergence \(D_R\) of the series (1) if and only if the analytic function \[ g(s):= \sum^\infty_{n=0} a_ns^n\;|s|< R \] is analytically continuable across the point \(s_0= t_0+(t^2- 1)^{{1\over 2}}\) of its circle of convergence [see \textit{Z. Nehari}, J. Rat. Mech. Analysis 5, 987-992 (1956; Zbl 0071.06502)]. Later, R. P. Gilbert proved that Nehari's theorem remains true for Jacobi polynomials \(P^{(\alpha,\beta)}_n\) \((\alpha>-1, \beta>-1)\) in place of \(P^{(0,0)}_n\) [see \textit{R. P. Gilbert}, Function theoretic methods in partial differential equations (1969; Zbl 0187.35303)]. In the present paper, the authors give a new proof for the Nehari-Gilbert theorem. The method is based on a result proved by them in a preprint.
