Consider \(GL_n\) as a function from algebras to sets. The authors study certain subfunctors of \(GL_n\) denoted \(Q\), \(Q^*\) and \(Q^m\). The authors show that these are representable functors, with \(O(Q)\), \(O(Q^*)\) and \(O(Q^m)\) being the envelopes of \(O(GL_n)\) in the classes of Hopf algebras, Hopf algebras with bijective antipode and Hopf algebras with antipodes of order \(2m\) respectively. \(O(Q)\), \(O(Q^*)\), \(O(Q^m)\) and \(O(GL_n)\) are all quotient algebras of \(k\langle X_{ij}^{(h)}\); \(1\leq i,j\leq n\), \(h\geq 0\rangle\) by certain ideals. The authors determine (noncommutative) Gröbner bases for these ideals [the reviewer had trouble finding an explicit statement for \(O(Q^m)\)]. For \(O(Q)\), \(O(Q^*)\), \(O(GL_n)\), a degree formula is obtained which is used to show that the group of units of these 3 algebras is \(k^*\).
