Here a Borcherds algebra is a generalized Kac-Moody algebra where all the simple roots have finite-dimensional root spaces. By superalgebra is meant a \(\theta\)-colored algebra, rather than just a \(\mathbb{Z}_2\)-graded algebra. However, the off-diagonal terms of the coloring matrix do not play an important role. The main result of the paper is the determination of a closed-form root multiplicity formula for Borcherds superalgebras. The formula is derived from the Weyl-Kac-Borcherds character formula by similar techniques to those used in earlier papers of the first author [\textit{S.-J. Kang}, Math. Ann. 298, 373-384 (1994; Zbl 0787.17022)]. The formula is applied to some rank 2 examples and to a superized version of the Monster Lie algebra where the root multiplicities are given in terms of the coefficients of the elliptic modular function \(j(q)-744\).
