The authors investigate initial and initial-boundary value problems for one-dimensional gas dynamics system in Lagrangian coordinates: \(u_t+ p(v,s)_x= 0\), \(v_t- u_x= 0\), \(s_t= 0\), \(s\not\equiv\text{const}\). Using some a priori estimates and a fixed point theorem, they prove the existence of smooth and piecewise smooth solutions under suitable technical assumptions on initial data and the entropy \(s(x)\) of the gas.
