The paper is the first part of a quite long article, which is -- following the author -- because of its length subdivided into three parts. While the whole work is devoted to the study of methods for transforming an infinite series into a complex integral (over an infinite interval), the aim of the present first part is to give an introduction and to provide the necessary facts on polynomial approximation on an infinite interval, on orthogonal polynomials, and on Gauss-Christoffel rules. It is both a review and a research paper. It contains several figures and tables, and shows the results of a number of numerical tests. Finally, a list of 52 references is included.
