Consider the problem in two space variables \(x\), \(y\) and time \(t\) of computing the boundary \(y=z(x, t)\) between the liquid face (\(0< y< z(x, t)\), water) and the solid face (\(z(x,t)< y\), ice) of a medium, given the value \(u(x,0, t)\) of the temperature and some spatial boundary conditions for \(t= 0\). This is called the (two-dimensional) Stefan problem. The authors consider the inverse problem where \(y= z(x,t)\) is known and the boundary value function \(u(x,0,t)\) is sought. This is an ill-posed problem. The authors regularize the problem after reduction to a system of integral equations and then to a system of convolution equations. A numerical application is presented.
