The author studies the rational Picard group of in general not ample hypersurfaces in toric varieties. For the toric varieties themselves, Cox's construction of the homogeneous coordinate ring is used. Afterwards, one obtains information about the hypersurface via studying the cohomological behavior of the embedding map as done by \textit{V. I. Danilov} and \textit{A. G. Khovanskij} [Math. USSR, Izv. 29, 279-298 (1987); translation from Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Mat. 50, No. 5, 925-945 (1986; Zbl 0669.14012)]. Finally, as an application, Roan considers the special case of CY hypersurfaces (Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces) in toric Fano varieties.
