The authors note that orthonormal frames can be smoothly extended across discontinuous signature change (of course, the causal behaviour of one of the frame vectors is bound to change discontinuously). They propose to derive Einstein's equation in the presence of signature change, using a variational principle which is based on these frame components. The Lagrangian will contain curvature terms, and at the hypersurface of signature change one-sided limits of these curvature terms are used. This usage of one-sided limits has been criticized in the literature, chiefly by \textit{S. A. Hayward} [see http://xxx.lanl.gov/, paper {\texttt{gr-qc/9606044}} (1996)].
